Group Counselling
Group counselling is a safe environment where a small number of us, typically between four and eight people, will get together to share openly and honestly about our experiences.
Each individual can choose to talk about things that they’re struggling with in life and get reflections and feedback from the group if they feel comfortable with that or you can simply talk about some wins and things that are going well for you in life that you feel proud of and would like to share.
It’s really up to you and you can decide how much or how little you’d like to participate.
Why would I choose to do group counselling instead of doing either individual counselling or couples counselling?
There are a number of benefits that are specifically available in group counselling that are not available in other forms of counselling.
One obvious benefit is that group counselling is much cheaper than other forms of counselling.
However, other benefits might include:
- Knowing that you’re not alone in your struggles and that other people have similar experiences and can relate to what you’re going through
- Being able to deeply heal and be witnessed in the healing process by, not just the therapist themselves, but a small set of our peers
- Being able to set goals for changing particular detrimental patterns in our lives and then being able to use the regular meetings of the group as a way to hold us accountable to those changes
- There is an inherent social aspect to group therapy that is not the case in solo therapy which allows us to discover who we are in relationship to others with different personalities and traits that may either comfort or trigger us
- Group counselling can give us a glimpse into something beyond the individual ego experience, something which the philosopher Martin Buber referred to as an ‘I-thou’ experience
I regularly run counselling groups at different days and times, so if you’re interested in exploring some group counselling, please contact me by clicking here for details on when our current or upcoming groups are running.
